The Right to Education


April was a busy news month for our international partner Inclusion International

On April 1: The UN Human Rights Council Endorsed Inclusion International’s Position on Article 19
At the UN in Geneva, Switzerland, the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) approved a resolution on the right of persons with disabilities to be included in the community. The HRC, which heard from Inclusion International Council member and self-advocate Quincy Mwiya at their annual debate on the rights of persons with disabilities, echoed Inclusion International’s report on Article 19 with the recognition of the link between the right to live in the community and the right to make decisions. A little later in April Inclusion International praised UNESCO for the release of the 2015 EFA Global Monitoring Report “Education for All 2000-2015: Achievements and challenges”. President Klaus Lachwitz said “Although the report paints a grim picture of the exclusion of children with disabilities we laud UNESCO for including research and data on children with disabilities in the report.”  Inclusion International had previously criticized the Global Monitoring Reports for their lack of attention to children with disabilities, which has gradually improved.
The report acknowledges that “Marginalization is higher for children with disabilities, and disability is common” and that “Disability status increases the risk of educational exclusion.” More on this news item
