Accessibility

As an organization working towards making our communities more inclusive, CACL is committed to accessibility both on- and offline. We have endeavoured to ensure that our website meets current web accessibility best practices, while acknowledging that accessibility is a "moving target" and that there is always room for improvement.

Here's a summary of the priorities we've tried to adhere to. 

CACL's Web Accessibility Goals

  1. We try to ensure our website meets all of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0, especially the Priority 1 guidelines
  2. As a secondary set of guidelines, we also refer to the U.S. federal government's Section 508 guidelines.
  3. Because offering transcripts for all audio & video content is often challenging for us, we try to offer alternative content (such as text descriptions) whenever possible.
  4. We try to provide as much of our content as possible in plain language.
  5. We try to provide as much of our content as possible in both official languages of Canada: French and English.
  6. We've built our website in such a way that it can be navigated with a keyboard, screen reader, or other assistive devices.
  7. We try to strike a balance between the needs of self-advocates - who often prefer visual displays of information rather than text only - and the needs of people with visual disabilities, by incorporating images into our content but ensuring the text makes sense without the images.
  8. We've designed our web forms to have extra-large text fields and buttons, to make them easier to click on. This is helpful for people with limited mobility as well as people with visual disabilities (and it's just easier for the rest of us, too!).
